Gee, Who Needs Scary When You Can Go Mad?

31 Oct

I went for a mad costume this year by dressing up as a Mad Men character…no one in particular, just one of Don Draper’s nameless ladies, of course.  I wish I had had more time to dress it up and go all out, but I lacked some motivation without a Don Draper partner.  I teased up my hair and pulled out my vintage dress from Debois which I bought this summer.

Speaking of Mad Men…what is Don Draper doing?!  I am still baffled by his proposal on the October 17th finale.  Is Don just trying to replace the memory of Anna with the fantasy of Megan?  Is he setting his expectations for her too high?  Is he even capable of a meaningful relationship?  Until next season…

Gee, Don’s The Man

In this week’s episode of Mad Men (“The Good News”), Don ventured back to LA to visit Mrs. Draper.  His good side shines through as he shows true concern for Mrs. Draper’s cancerous condition.  Dick’s sweet heart is in Don Draper’s hot body somewhere!

But just when I get my hopes up about Don/Dick having a soul, I face a major letdown.  Don and Lane have an unexpected bonding experience over the lonely holidays.  Personally, the demure and proper Lane was the last character I ever would have partnered with Don for his bad boy antics.  But alas, Don’s charms work their magic, and he gets the Brit businessman drunk and hires him a hooker.  A lovely influence, Mr. Draper.  It will be interesting to see where this bout of camaraderie will lead.

Whether you are male or female, there’s no denying the enchanting ways of Don Draper.  He is just too suave for words.  When I found this article entitled, “Don Draper’s 10 Lessons in Being a Man” on the Death + Taxes website, I couldn’t help but smile and think, “Bingo.”  Looking over the list of Don’s bad boy tendencies is truly comical.

Although Don is deceptive and his behaviors are less than admirable, I always want to see the good in him.  I want to believe in the compassionate Dick/Don/whoever is in there, but something always pulls this man down into the gutter of morality once again.

P.S. I am a huge someecard.com fan, so I was overjoyed to find that they have e-cards just for Mad Men.  Amazing.

Gee, Mad Habits

New episode of Mad Men in a little over an hour!  In honor of yet another hour of mystery and intrigue in the ad world, I thought I’d share an entertaining and fascinating article that I found on the Ad Age website.

Sexual rendezvous and drinking are commonplace on the job.  The crew at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce have no qualms about throwing back a few liquor drinks during a typical day at the office to get the creative juices flowing.  It all adds to that sexy ambiance of the ad world…right?

Peter Madden of Ad Age decided to explore this office practice in the real world to discover “The Effects of a Three Martini Lunch on the Creative Process.”  You can probably guess how this experiment turns out in the real world: not so sexy.  But hey, there is no denying that Don Draper makes it look that way.  Mmmmmhmmmm…cheers to that.

Gee, What A Mad World

It’s finally here!  AMC’s hit show “Mad Men” returns tonight with the season 4 premiere at 10pm ET.

Yes, I’ll admit it: I’m a “Mad Men” junky.  My mother got me hooked after she lent me seasons 1 and 2.  But how could I not get sucked in?  The characters are enticing and bizarre, each with their own secrets and demons in an era that is obsessed with keeping up appearances and looking like the Cleavers.  Each one is absolutely mad, but they hide it with makeup, fancy drinks, and fake smiles.  Every day is a balancing act as they try to keep it all together.

The “Mad Men Unbuttoned” blog does a remarkable job of highlighting the intricacies time period.  It is a fantastic “Romp Through 1960’s America” that really analyzes the culture of this hit series.  Recently, the blog became a book…so it’s gotta be pretty good.  Check it out!

One of my favorite blogging projects, the “fabulous and opinionated” Tom & Lorenzo, are all over “Mad Men” fashion and news.  They hold nothing back in their brutally honest reviews, which is why I adore them.  Lucky for us, they got to check out an early premiere of this mesmerizing show.  All I can say is this little snippet has me on the edge of my seat:

“Trust us, it was one of the best episodes of the show we’d ever seen. Really. There wasn’t one boring moment or wasted line and pretty much every character got a brief moment in the spotlight.”

It’s gonna be mad…
